IFAD was established in 1977 to serve as an International Financial Institute.
It came into existence as a result of the early 1970s food crisis that practically affected the Sahara countries of Africa. IFAD's main objective is to fund Rural Development Projects especially in the area of AGRICULTURE and RURAL FINANCING. IFAD has been in operations in Sierra Leone as far back as 1980. Its operations in the country were suspended because of the war.

IFAD has provided a total of USD 57.2 million in financing six (6) loans and three (3) grants for programmes and projects. The two (2) main IFAD's projects in Sierra Leone are;
